The Darkest Hour at 3am
They say not to lie in bed awake—that it only fuels the anxiety of not sleeping, making sleep even harder to find. Sleep is the rhythm of our heart and lungs. Yet we now inhabit a world of insomnia, a space without true sleeping or waking. It is hard to describe this state, which transforms the night into a timeless black hole, stretching moments into eternity. They are the nights spent staring at the ceiling until sleep finally creeps into the body. Insomnia is a wandering from sleep; it transmutes the day's wakefulness into a glowing nightlight that divides us from rest itself. Critically, the origin of insomnia may not be a disorder within you, but rather an influence from outside. Once these external forces are addressed, better sleep can follow. Don’t worry, you’re not alone.
The Darkest Hour at 3am is a group exhibition that immerses visitors in the external forces shaping our sleep. It recreates the psychological grip of a techno-capitalist society, where the erosion of rest has become a silent epidemic with catastrophic consequences for modern life—one of the defining challenges of the twenty-first century. This exhibition journeys into the roots of sleep's disruption, questioning whether, in the shadow of industrialisation and techno-capitalism, we can rediscover the conditions for true rest. The Darkest Hour at 3am does not offer a cure, but a space for contemplation—a first step towards finding peace in the night.
